Before – a pry bar has been dropped into the printing press, leaving an imprint on the cylinder. At this point, the owner of the printing press is thinking that this cylinder is done, requiring a lot of downtime and expense. However, this is a routine in-press cylinder repair for us! These photos show the basic steps involved in making this type of in-press repair. After spray welding to fill in the large holes and gouges in the cylinder, electro chemical metallizing (also known as brush plating) is the last step in the repair process. This leaves a very nice looking finish which will provide excellent service for the press cylinder. Most other repair companies utilize copper to fill in the voids, which requires a much larger repair that might not last as long as our method. It is also subject to corrosion of the thin layer of copper that extends from the damaged area to where it is feathered out from the cast iron sub-surface. Our method is a thicker, stronger deposit that will not corrode because it is made of nickel. Since there is no thin, feathered area on the printing press cylinder, the surrounding chrome finish remains intact. This matches up better to the existing finish and provides a longer lasting repair of your press cylinder.
